In the last few years, UFRN has made significant investments in the establishment of a bioinformatics initiative. Top investigators have been hired by different departments in the University culminating with the recruitment of Prof. Sandro J. de Souza, a bioinformatics pioneer in Brazil, by the Brain Institute in 2012.
At the beginning of 2014, discussions between Prof. Sandro J. de Souza and Prof. José Ivonildo do Rêgo, director of the Digital Metropolis Institute (IMD) and a former president of the University, led to the establishment of a bioinformatics emphasis in the undergraduate course at IMD. Also in 2014, a bioinformatics network coordinated by UFRN was funded by CAPES with teams across the country and abroad.
At the end of 2015, a graduate program, with both MS and PhD, was approved by CAPES and the first selection of students took place in early 2016. BioME was created in 2016 and today occupies a 600 m2 space close to the main UFRN campus. BioME’s core facility (Centro Multiusuário de Bioinformática) was established to offer bioinformatics services to both academic and industrial communities.
